OFFICIALS

Our officials are a key link to the success of our program. We applaud their steadying ability in directing each meet and their willingness to explain to a swimmer their error thus allowing them to improve their skills.

  • Rich Jacobson, Head Official

  • Brian Hunemuller

  • Matt Meyer

Every Big Six Swim Club intrasquad meet must have a minimum number of officials — you can recognize them by their white shirts and blue shorts. They are parents volunteering their talents, with a little extra training. If you are interested in being an official, you do get costs for official dues reimbursed by the club. Email us for more information. Our summer meets must have at least 4 officials to qualify as a "sanctioned" meet. If a meet is sanctioned, it means the meet was run according to USA swimming guidelines, and qualifying times achieved allow swimmers to be eligible for Silvers or State. The officials’ responsibilities are numerous...below are a few.

  • REFEREE: The meet referee is the head official. He/She assigns zones to each of the other personnel for watching swim technique, making sure that the pool is clear after each event, signing every DQ form, knowing all of the rules and ensuring that they are followed, instructing the timers and coaches, etc.

  • STARTER: The starter must make sure that all swimmers can have the best start possible. They announce the event, make sure that swimmers are prepared to mount the blocks, etc. They also watch technique once swimmers are in the water.

  • STROKE AND TURN: These officials watch swimmers in their zones to confirm that everyone is swimming per the rules stated by USA Swimming. They must raise their hand before writing a DQ, and always give swimmers the benefit of the doubt.

  • ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICIAL: These officials know how to run the meet. They review results and compare order of finish to the timer results, and they investigate any results that seems peculiar.
